5 minutes of caring

Twice Worn

Twice Worn

Wear it again, Sam (or Samantha).

Washing clothes is one of the most energy-laden activities that happens in our homes. Therefore, think about those articles of clothing that can be worn more than once before they need washing. Everyone's preferences are different, but chances are, those jeans can be donned once more before they need detergent and a good rinse. And, as long as you're not out marathoning, perhaps a shirt can find its way back into the closet after just one time out. Stains and odors aside, think about what can get a second trip around the block before it heads to the hamper.

Well, now I have a legitimate excuse for being lazy about doing laundry. Excellent. I'm not procrastinating, I'm being eco-friendly. Thanks!

I think my husband pioneered the 'gently-worn' idea. He usually has a pile of 'gently-worn' clothes, such as jeans and sweatshirts, that he puts on after work (where he has to wear a suit/tie), and wears for a couple hours at most before going to bed. I initially thought this was kinda crazy, but I came to see the wisdom in it. Why wash 5 pairs of jeans that have been worn 2 hours each? One cardinal rule is that socks and undies NEVER go into the gently-worn pile; but all other articles of clothing may qualify for gently-worn status.

Cool person Diane wrote us to say:

I Febreeze clothes that need dry cleaning and wear them multiple times before they have to go to the dry cleaners. This can be done many times particularly in the winter. Summer, since where I live is hot and humid, maybe only once. The same goes for washable items. Granted, Febreeze is a product but you only need one squirt per arm and you can wear it one more time.

Wow, I've been doing this all my life! And I thought I was just trying to make my clothes last longer, or keep from using up the expensive detergent I use. Or that maybe I was just bad at time management.

Turns out I'm eco-conscious. That's it...
