Doctor's orders: don't flush that medicine. If spring cleaning has you cleaning out pantries and medicine cabinets, be careful about what you're doing with those expired medicines. While it's easy to toss them (into the wastebasket or the toilet), hang on to them instead. Call your pharmacist to see if they can make sure your old tablets are properly disposed of. Or, take them to a local household hazardous waste center, which will also make sure they don't fall into the wrong hands or enter our waterways and hurt precious wildlife. The extra effort will make sure that your prescriptions are only used by you.
CommentsSusie commented, on April 4, 2008 at 11:37 a.m.: I gave old Psych meds to physicians who worked pro-bono with the homeless. These Doctors can usually be found at local homeless shelters on weekends and nights. It helps if you are a volunteer there so they know who you are. Dave commented, on May 30, 2008 at 11:55 a.m.: I question the safety of administering expired Psych meds, but I do agree that it would be better left to physicians and pharmacists to dispose of the medications. I didn't know you could do this but what few medicines I do have will be going to the pharmacist. Thank you.
