5 minutes of caring

Like the Mall but Better

Like the Mall but Better

Your local library is full of good ideas.

When was the last time you went to your local library? In fact, do you even know where it is? Even in today's overly digitized world, your library can still be of valuable use to you. Whether you're checking out a meaningful summer read or an interesting movie or CD, the library is your community's destination for wonderful entertainment options. And, since many libraries have great educational programming for children and adults, you may even learn a thing or two. Better yet, many of these services are free. So why not show up, jump in, and check (it) out?

A weekend staple for our family is a visit to the library - if not every weekend, then certainly other other weekend. Our 5 year old son just loves wearing his library card around his neck on his lanyard AND checking out his books by himself with his own card (in Nashville, as in most cities, book check-out can be done with a scanner instead of going through the check out desk with a libray staff). Our son thinks it's like checking out items at a grocery store!

We have a discussion on the way to the library of exactly what types of books he wants to get, recent topics of interest to him. Just last week, we checked out books (age appropriate, of course) about planets, asteriods, comets, stars, etc. We all learned new things while reading them! I bet this week's topics will be bugs. At least that's what he's been profoundly interested in THIS week:-)

Reminder for Nashvilians..... although libraries around the city are closed on Fridays (darn budget restraints), the Main Library downtown IS open! And it's such a beautiful building -- worth going to visit even if just to check out the architecture.
