Even as an adult, you should be going to school. You probably haven't had to answer that question since your high school or college days. And while that brief Q&A session at parties and meetings was fun, you can still have the same sense of pride as an adult by going to a school on a regular basis. Pick out your nearest public school and offer to be a tutor. Develop a partnership between your office and a deserving classroom. Take a tour. Be a guest speaker. When all of us (not just those with school aged children) get involved in our school system, lots of things will improve.

... or volunteer at the school in your neighborhood. Making copies or assisting teachers with special projects frees the teachers up ... to do more teaching. I've been volunteering since my oldest child was in pre-K. My youngest is now a senior in college and I still volunteer one morning a week. It's been a great way to make friends, stay informed and make a difference. Give it a try ... it's fun and rewarding.
