5 minutes of caring

Open Door Policy

Open Door Policy

Minimize the number of times you open the fridge after a grocery run.

For some of us, the most exciting time of the day is when whoever’s in charge of bringing home the bacon actually brings home bacon. Or fresh bell peppers, milk or organic yogurt. But what's your protocol for stocking the shelves in your fridges and freezers? Consider organizing your groceries before you open the doors on your home appliances. By only opening the freezer once, you'll conserve energy, since the warm air in the kitchen rushes in and heats things up a bit. Just make sure that you're not leaving the fridge door open the entire time you're unpacking.

Airflow is really the issue: if you don't use all of your fridge or freezer space, it makes sense to fill it with jugs of water (simply rinse some used milk jugs for that purpose). The cold (or frozen) water keeps the temperature inside from fluctuating due to airflow (simply because the water doesn't flow out the door when you open it, and warm air can't take up the space that's already occupied by cool H2O).
